You’re not sure what’s changed, but something feels off. Maybe the arguments have crept in more often. Or there’s silence instead of shouting, and neither feels good. You still care about each other. You just don’t know how to fix what’s gone wrong.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already asked yourself: Is it worth doing couples counselling? And maybe you’re hoping the answer is yes, but worried it might not be.
You’re not alone. Lots of couples come to that crossroads. At the Sheffield Wellness Centre, we’ve worked with people at all stages of their relationships. Some have just hit a bump. Others are facing big decisions about whether to stay together.
So, is it worth doing couples counselling? Let’s look at what it actually involves, what you might get from it, and how to know if it’s right for you.
Let’s be clear. Couples counselling, also known as couples therapy, isn’t about blame. No one’s there to win or be told who’s in the right. Instead, it’s a space for both people to be heard.
At SWC, experienced counsellors like Yuli Angelidou and Sarah Drabble work with couples to gently explore what’s happening beneath the surface. They don’t just focus on the symptoms, like conflict or distance. They help you understand the patterns that keep repeating and how each of you responds to stress, hurt or misunderstanding.
And they do it without judgment.
For many couples, it’s the first time in ages they’ve had space to slow down, reflect, and actually talk. Not just react.
Here are some of the most common benefits we see in the couples we work with:
We won’t pretend it always works. At SWC, we’re honest about that.
Counselling might not help if:
But when both people are open, even if they’re scared or sceptical, counselling can shift things in a way that feels meaningful.
There’s evidence behind it too.
Studies show that around 70% of couples who attend counselling report improvements in their relationship. That doesn’t always mean total transformation, but it often means more connection, less tension, and a renewed sense of teamwork.
Couples who go earlier, not just in a crisis, tend to get more out of it.
At SWC, we often hear people say:
“I wish we’d done this sooner.”
The kind of counsellor you see makes a big difference. That’s why our couples therapists are trained specifically in relationship work, not just general counselling.
Yuli Angelidou for example, has 15 years of experience working with the kinds of issues couples often struggle with. Yuli is warm, insightful, and deeply committed to helping each person feel safe and understood, whatever their background or gender identity.
Sarah Drabble has over 30 years of experience working in teaching so she has lots of experience at resolving conflict and disagreements. Combining that experience with her counselling training means she is able to bring a sensitive, grounded approach that many couples find both reassuring and gently challenging.
You can learn more about our therapists here or just get in touch and we’ll help you find someone who’s a good fit for your situation.
If you said yes to even one of those, it might be time to try a session. There’s no rule that says you have to wait until things get worse.
Couples counselling isn’t about saving a relationship at any cost. It’s about honesty, understanding, and giving yourselves a chance to grow. Whether that’s together or apart.
At the Sheffield Wellness Centre, we’ve seen relationships shift in powerful ways. And we’ve seen the relief people feel just from starting the conversation.
If you’re curious or ready, you can meet our therapists or just get in touch. It’s just one step. But it could change a lot.
