What is a case study?

A case study explores how a specific therapy has impacted someone’s life through real experiences and results. In this example, “Overcoming Chronic Driving Anxiety with Hypnotherapy by Paula Rist,” you’ll learn how hypnotherapy and complementary techniques helped Jane, a 61-year-old retired lady, significantly reduce her driving anxiety and regain confidence behind the wheel.

The situation

Jane, a 61-year-old retired lady, contacted me to help her with extreme chronic driving anxiety. For confidentiality, she will be referred to as Jane. Jane had been struggling with driving anxiety for a significant period, which had escalated to the point where she completely avoided driving. She also experienced panic attacks when her partner was behind the wheel. Jane mentioned that she had always been a nervous driver, with her anxiety worsening as she grew older. Although she had never undergone any form of therapy before, her research led her to believe that hypnotherapy could be beneficial for her condition.

During the initial consultation, Jane expressed her desire to alleviate her chronic anxiety symptoms and enhance her overall quality of life, particularly concerning driving and her relationship with her partner while traveling by car. An anxiety assessment scale measured her baseline anxiety levels, which indicated severe symptoms. Jane shared her history and feelings about driving and traveling, revealing that she had experienced a minor, non-threatening car accident as a child but hadn’t considered it significant.

Jane was also provided with information on how hypnotherapy could effectively address her issues. The session concluded with a gentle progressive therapeutic relaxation, which she found very enjoyable.

The treatment phase

The treatment plan included a variety of techniques to address Jane’s anxiety:

  • Relaxation Techniques: Yoga breathwork, mindfulness, and guided relaxation.
  • Hypnotherapy Techniques: Guided imagery, positive aspects of past events, and nurturing regression.
  • Phobia Release Work: Addressing the specific fears related to driving.
  • Positive Suggestion Therapy: Reinforcing calming and confidence-building suggestions.
  • NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming): Utilised both as a standalone technique and within hypnotherapy sessions.
  • Grounding Anchors and Power Signals: Creating psychological anchors for calmness.
  • EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique): Using tapping techniques to release feelings and thoughts associated with panic.
  • Sympathetic Nervous System Work: Focusing on shifting from the fight-or-flight response to the parasympathetic (calming) state.

Each session also included an anxiety assessment form to track Jane’s progress.

The outcome

Throughout the sessions, Jane reported a gradual yet significant reduction in her anxiety. A notable breakthrough occurred when Jane mentioned that she hadn’t had any panic attacks and had successfully parked her car on the drive—something she had only done once before in her life. Her anxiety while traveling with her partner also improved.

By the end of the fourth session, Jane’s anxiety levels had decreased markedly. She no longer experienced panic attacks and felt more like her younger, more confident self. Jane reported feeling so relaxed while driving that she no longer gripped the wheel tightly with both hands. Additionally, she enjoyed a scenic trip with her partner without experiencing any anxiety, appreciating the journey.

Conclusion
There was no need for additional sessions. Hypnotherapy, along with the other therapeutic tools and techniques, proved to be an effective treatment for Jane’s panic and driving anxiety. This case highlights a positive outcome for the client, who continues to listen to the recordings and use the therapeutic tools and knowledge provided. Jane is now a happy, relaxed, and calm client. 😊 What a star she is.
