As the seasons change and the days get darker, some individuals experience a shift in mood and energy levels known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). At the Sheffield Wellness Centre, we’re here to shed light on SAD and provide support for those affected by it.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs at a specific time of year, typically during the autumn and winter months when daylight hours are shorter. It’s believed that the decrease in sunlight exposure during these seasons disrupts the body’s internal clock and neurotransmitter levels, leading to changes in mood, energy levels, and sleep patterns.
People with SAD may experience a range of symptoms, including feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and irritability, as well as changes in appetite, weight, and sleep. They may also have difficulty concentrating, experience fatigue or low energy, and withdraw from social activities.
SAD can have a significant impact on daily functioning and quality of life, making it important to seek support and treatment if you suspect you may be affected.
At the Sheffield Wellness Centre, we understand the challenges of living with SAD and are here to provide support and guidance for those affected by it. Our aim is to raise awareness about SAD, provide information about its symptoms and treatment options, and offer practical strategies for managing and coping with seasonal depression.
Whether you’re struggling with SAD yourself or supporting a loved one through it, know that you’re not alone, and help is available.
Hello, The World at present doesn't have any standards anymore. So I don't expect anything from anyone. However in this case I spoke to a brilliant and diligent staff member called Sarah. She was incredibly pleasant and knew her job like the back of her hand. My inquiry was dealt with a standard which I would have set myself when I used to work. So very happy to have this very pleasant surprise. Keep up the Good Work. I honestly couldn't speak higher of the service. Thanks Steve
Deborah Chadbourne is an excellent counsellor. She is a good listener who offers subtle and insightful advice. The Wellness Centre is comfortable and well situated along Abbeydale Road.
I've been using the Sheffield Wellness Centre for nearly two years and enjoy the calm, comfortable and friendly feel of the rooms, and the great support from the managers.
I spoke with Richard who was helped me a lot in understanding my situation. He was also generous with his time when the question required longer than the 15mins. Thank you.
They provided excellent advise regarding our 3 children who all have SEN. Richard was very supportive and took his time to give us the best advice possible.
Deborah Chadbourn was an excellent grief counsellor for me. It is five years since my first wife died, and we explored how I am feeling now, and how to navigate new and old relationships while remaining true to everything from the past. Deborah is a great listener, and provides good challenge and advice. The venue worked well for me, as did the evening appointments. Thank you!
Shabana is one of those rare people who truly listens and understands without judgement. Her support came at a time when life felt overwhelming, and she helped me slowly rebuild my confidence and sense of self. I always left each session feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded, and the tools she shared continue to help me every day. She helped me piece myself back together and reminded me that healing doesn’t mean becoming someone new — it means rediscovering who you’ve always been. I feel like my old self again, only stronger and more at peace. I can’t thank her enough.
My reki session was relaxing in a lovely environment . I really benefited from it and had a great nights sleep. Highly recommend.
Lovely mixture of reiki and creative life coaching from Jemma Rosenthal. Found the reiki very grounding and healing and the life coaching helped me navigate a difficult period of change and to clear some blocks in my life.
I am looking forward to offering homeopathy from Sheffield Wellness Centre. The rooms have a lovely relaxing feel and they are lovely and clean. Sheffield Wellness Centre is conveniently situated with on street parking and bus access.
Our work group recently had a Wellness Day and we were able to book Jemma Rosenthal and Ranaa Farooq from the Sheffield Wellness Centre for an instructional workshop. I have since received excellent feedback from group members. Jemma and Ranaa provided a very lively and well-coordinated session. We were able to cover topics such as Visualisation in a systematic manner. All along, attendees were impressed with the passion and interest displayed by both presenters. As an audience, we were certainly captivated. I can wholeheartedly recommend Jemma and Ranaa for any future events.
I had 2 sessions with Kim but to be honest after the first I was totally stress free her ability to remember all the people involved shoed her compasion I am so grateful and have slept like a log ever since thankyou ❤️
Charlotte is totally my medicine, she is amazing and iv been seeing her for various things and she has solved them. Cant recommend her or the Centre enough its very private, clean and relaxing. Thank you
Came to have my session with Jemma Rosenthal here. The restrooms are so clean. There are steps that one needs to be careful of once you get onto the first floor. Fabulous place other than that, just wish it had a lift. Regarding my session: Oh wow, where do I start?! Even before meeting Jemma, i've felt at ease as there is something with the way she talks, which is so calming and reassuring. My first session was exhaustive, but I loved it. I enjoyed the relaxing Reiki in the end. She tells me that I need to tell her when I am feeling tired of talking about my depressive past and that she can approach a different way of therapy. This feels so liberating because she is basically willing to tailor the session for YOUR needs. She is a wise lady. Though she is younger than me, she is very caring, intelligent and as I said a wise person. I am so happy that our paths crossed and she is helping me come out of my bad phase. I came home and was so relaxed (I was singing freely and my husband noticed a change in the way I sing it was excellent)... I've been happy and been chuckling which is so not like me but the sad phase is jutting out of my system. I've had other private sessions for depression but wanted someone to coach my life who understands anxiety and depression. I don't remember how I found her online but glad that I did!! -Sharvani ♡☆♡ She's truly a Gem... Jem✨
I met Richard today with a view to hiring the rooms for children's Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean and spacious the rooms were. The space was light and tidy and Richard was extremely welcoming and goes the extra mile for therapist. Providing web support, pages on Sheffield wellness site for all therapist. Support at gaining clients. The place is easily accessible to Sheffield and the Peak District. Highly recommended.
A beautiful little haven tucked behind a busy street. Convenient to get to, the rooms are cosy and quiet - with a wealth of practitioners offering their skills. Its outdoor space holds a community feel with a neighbouring cafe and quirky shops to browse after a treatment.
Rooms were very good for therapy. Quiet, warm and comfortable with quality furnishings. Kept very clean and always plenty of clean glasses and fresh water available.
A wonderful calming place on Abbeydale road, with perfectly serene therapy rooms.
I've visited the Centre for a massage and I'm about to begin hiring the rooms myself as a practitioner. The rooms are really beautifully done out, with a lot of care and attention to detail. Richard has been very supportive and helpful in getting registered and started up.
i had 1-1 a reiki session with Nadine and it exceeded expectations. parking for the wellness centre on nearby streets was easy, it's easy to find and the therapy rooms are beautiful. i couldn't recommend it enough and will 100% be returning!
Well kept, warm and welcoming rooms. Hot and soft drinks available. It makes therapy sessions a little easier
Super lovely people and place! Lovely rooms, lovely vibe. Great place to have a massage and so well located. Lots of thought and care has gone into making this place as special as it is. Highly recommend. Had a hot stones massage with Fi today. I’ve been floating ever since. Highly recommend. Great way to treat to aching shoulders and neck. I feel renewed x
I had a Reiki session with Nadine, it was so good and Nadine was excellent she took time to explain everything and made me feel comfortable. Good communication and really helpful. So happy with the session I booked straight in for my next.
Booked in for a regression hypnotherapy session with Helen and the experience was absolutely amazing, highly recommended . Helen was like a breath of fresh air , just what I needed, thanks
I've had two massages with Fi at the Wellness Centre 'so far' and both times I've come away feeling like a different person. Fi not only has magic healing hands that make you feel wonderful with every touch, but she treats you with such calm and gentle compassion that this is a really holistic therapeutic experience. Definitely recommend
I had a pregnancy massage with Fi and it was amazing! the centre is a very relaxing place and she had it warm and comfortable for me. Despite her wearing PPE, the gloves didn't affect the feel of the massage and wearing masks made me feel safe. The actual massage was so relaxing and relieved any tension I felt as Fi had asked me where any tension was. I would highly recommend her to any pregnant ladies!
As a complete beginner and not being quite as agile as I'd like I was a bit nervous about attending a Yoga class but while I may be slightly biased given Elisha of Grow Yoga is my daughter I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of her class. She's a beautiful human with a passion and energy that radiates from her. She explains everything perfectly and encourages you to just go at your own pace and enjoy. On each occasion I've been I've left feeling like the world is a much brighter place with a calmness that is rare to feel in this very busy world. If you do have the chance to try one of her classes please take it, you'll fall in love with Grow Yoga
This is a wonderful oasis of calm and positivity tucked away inside a leafy courtyard on Abbeydale Road. The rooms are light, comfortable and tranquil. I always leave feeling brighter than I arrived.
A well laid out and welcoming place, conveniently located on a major route in to the city. Additionally, there is a small cafe for social meetups, before or after a session in the centre.
I have had the most wonderful hypnotherapy session with Fi from the Sheffield Wellness Centre. I knew from previous chats with her that she had the perfect voice and open demeanor for hypnotherapy, and I wasn't wrong. She immediately put me at ease and I was able to open up honestly with her. The session itself was lovely, I went quickly into a trance state and, although it's early days, feel very much that the session was beneficial: I already feel lighter and more in control of the anxiety and other problems I suffer with. The Sheffield Wellness Centre is also the perfect therapeutic space. The therapy rooms are lovely and perfectly suited to a range of therapies and the studio is bright and welcoming. I'm so excited to continue my therapy with Fi and am 100% sure this will give me so much benefit, I can't recommend her and the SWC enough.
This is an amazing space and i am very much looking forward to running regular yoga classes from here. It's a great location in Sheffield and as soon as i walked into the studio i knew i could work from here. Very clean and well maintained space and its obvious a lot of love and care has gone into setting it up.
Lovely venue, I had a Reiki session with Jess. It was my first session with her, she was very welcoming and explain the process in detail. The treatment was wonderful, I felt relax and a sense of joy during the session.I highly recommend Jess and the place to anyone that wants to try Reiki for the first time as she is a very gentle and calm person.
Lovely place! Coasy, beautiful, newly decorated rooms. Easily accesible from Sheffield city centra and Pick District. A lot of qualified therapists with experiences in various disciplines. Highly recommended!
I couldn't recommend Natalia enough! I have been treated by her and her essences for over a year now and we have gone through different levels of healing processes that I needed to go through. The powerful drops prepared for you at the end of the session gives you the extra help that you need to face your challenges... Thank you ever so much Nah! For the healing reiki sessions, the essences treatments and all the generosity and knowledge you bring and mix from your long time experience as a therapist; which makes your sessions unique and rich in love, faith and hope!!!
The Wellness Centre has a wonderful Yoga studio, one of the best intimate smaller yoga spaces I have ever used. Absolutey wonderful!
I met with Richard today to view the treatments rooms and the studio. What a lovely, calming, welcoming and comfortable place, with a generous touch of character! Richard was incredibly helpful and welcoming. I left feeling very excited at the prospect of using the premises for my classes and client sessions.
Lovely peaceful premises, beautifully kept. Run by the most lovely, helpful and friendly people. A great place to come for any type of treatment or to hire the rooms. If only more places were run as well as this one! Fantastic!
What a wonderful space! We had a great time at baby yoga, Fi is wonderful. I will be back for more of the lovely things on offer!
Beautiful place. So many different things going on. Peaceful and excellent service.
I had a wonderful experience with Richard, He is very friendly, I found it really easy to talk to him. He has all the qualities of a Good Hypnotherapist. I would recommend all my friends to him. And trust me it was first time I met him and it was great.
An amazing place to give and receive treatments. Love the space and the people.
The Sheffield Wellness Centre is a place of calm tranquillity, perfect for giving and receiving treatments. Well done to Richard and Fi.
Pamper Party What a great idea! A bit of ‘me time’, in the most wonderfully relaxing surroundings. The Wellness Centre has such a relaxed, homely feel to it - much nicer than my actual home, as it is clean, tidy and welcoming! The atmosphere immediately put me at ease, I absolutely loved having time to chill out, chat and eat cake. Fi is the perfect hostess, making sure that we all had everything we needed, with her wonderful warm and caring manner. It was great to be able to choose what particular treatment or massage I wanted on the day. I surprised myself by trying something new and going for the hot stones massage, and I’m so glad I did. It was amazing, so deep and yet so gentle. It was really nice to experience my massage while listening to everyone else chatting happily, too. I completely recommend this if you are looking for the perfect excuse to have some guilt free time to yourself.

The exact cause of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) isn’t fully understood, but several factors likely contribute to its development. One key factor is the decrease in sunlight during the autumn and winter months.
With less daylight, the body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm, can be disrupted. This rhythm helps regulate sleep, mood, and other bodily functions. When it’s out of sync, it can lead to changes in mood and energy levels.
Another factor is the impact of seasonal changes on vitamin D production. Sunlight exposure helps the skin produce vitamin D, and during the darker months, lower levels of vitamin D can occur. This deficiency has been linked to mood disorders, including depression.
Additionally, genetic and biological factors might make some people more susceptible to SAD, influencing how their bodies respond to seasonal changes.
Psychosocial factors, like stress, lifestyle, and environment, can also play a role. People living in regions with long winters or extended darkness are more likely to experience SAD. Those with a history of depression or other mental health conditions may be at higher risk.
Overall, SAD seems to result from a mix of biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Understanding these various influences is crucial for finding effective treatments and managing the condition.
We’ve gathered our most frequently asked questions about SAD in Sheffield, putting them all in one place for your convenience.
managing seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can be challenging, but there are several self-care strategies you can incorporate into your daily routine to help alleviate symptoms and improve your overall well-being. Here are some tips to consider:
Invest in a light therapy lamp: Light therapy lamps, also known as sunrise lights or SAD lamps, mimic natural sunlight and can help regulate your body’s internal clock, improve mood, and increase energy levels. Using a light therapy lamp for 20-30 minutes each morning can be an effective way to combat the effects of SAD during the darker months.
Prioritise outdoor activities: Spending time outdoors, especially during daylight hours, can help increase exposure to natural light and improve mood. Try to incorporate outdoor activities into your daily routine, such as taking a walk in the park, going for a hike, or simply sitting outside in your garden. Even on overcast days, outdoor light can be beneficial for managing SAD symptoms.
Practice relaxation techniques: Managing stress is essential for maintaining mental health, especially for individuals with SAD. Incorporating relaxation techniques into your daily routine can help reduce stress levels and improve mood. Consider practicing mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or progressive muscle relaxation to promote relaxation and emotional well-being.
At the Sheffield Wellness Centre, we offer a range of therapy services to support individuals experiencing seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Our experienced therapists are here to provide compassionate care and effective treatment options to help you manage SAD symptoms and improve your overall well-being. Here are the therapies available for SAD:
Counselling: Counselling offers a safe and supportive space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to SAD. Our skilled counsellors use a variety of techniques to help you gain insight, develop coping strategies, and work towards positive change. Through counselling, you can learn to identify and address the underlying causes of your SAD symptoms, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and build resilience to better manage future challenges.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a highly effective form of therapy for treating SAD. CBT helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviours that contribute to SAD symptoms. By learning new coping skills and techniques, you can develop more adaptive ways of thinking and responding to seasonal changes, leading to a reduction in SAD symptoms and improved overall well-being.
Psychotherapy: Psychotherapy provides a comprehensive approach to treating SAD by addressing both the psychological and emotional aspects of the disorder. Our psychotherapists work collaboratively with you to explore the root causes of your SAD symptoms, identify patterns of behaviour, and develop personalised treatment plans tailored to your individual needs. Through psychotherapy, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself, improve self-awareness, and develop effective strategies for managing SAD symptoms and promoting long-term recovery.
