Beth Longstaff

Counsellor/psychotherapist

Beth is currently fully booked and is not taking on new clients.

I'm Beth and I'm a Counsellor/Psychotherapist with a commitment to putting you first in every session. I can support you to find your way through difficult times, to understand yourself better and to find the strengths you've lost sight of.

Whether you're looking for a counsellor for the first time, or have had therapy before but are looking for support with a new or recurring difficulty, I can offer you attentive, compassionate listening, without judgement and without any agenda for how you should be. We'll start wherever you are.

Specialises in:

My counselling approach brings together elements of successful therapeutic approaches which emphasise:
- building a trusting, warm and open relationship between us
- the power of respect, honesty and acceptance in facilitating lasting change

- a belief in your fundamental resourcefulness - acceptance and compassion for our human struggles and imperfections

I have my own longstanding mindfulness and meditation practice and can support you with mindfulness-based approaches to stress, anxiety or unhelpful worry. I also draw on Compassion Focused Therapy in my work, which is particularly helpful if you are very self critical or judge yourself harshly.

I can also support you to use imagery or creative writing to help you make sense of things, and offer ways of drawing on your body's natural wisdom to support your emotional wellbeing.

Therapies offered: Individual counselling and psychotherapy, both short term and open ended.

I’ve been working in mental health and therapy services for well over ten years, and feel very lucky to be doing work that I love. I’ve provided counselling in the NHS, charities and in private practice, and have been accredited by the BACP since 2015. I also have experience as a Mental Health First Aid instructor and Samaritans volunteer.

I’ve lived in Sheffield for over 30 years, first coming to to study Psychology and putting down strong and happy roots. I love Sheffield’s parks and hills and how close we are to the Peaks. I have a longstanding interest in Buddhism and a regular mindfulness practice, which help me appreciate the little things and cope with the big ones.

I have the following

  • Accreditation with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
  • Psychology BSc, Diploma HE in Counselling
  • Enhanced DBS check (criminal record check)
  • Regular clinical supervision and training

Why you should work with me:

At the heart of my approach to counselling is attentive, compassionate listening, without judgement and without any agenda for how you should be. My aim is to understand your feelings and what you’re experiencing, so that we can work together to find a way forward through your difficulties.

I will accept you exactly as you are, with all the difficulties and fears you don’t feel good about – as well as the strengths and talents that you might have lost sight of. We will work at your pace, on whatever issues feel most important to you.
