What is autism and ADHD?

Autism and ADHD are both neurodevelopmental conditions that can affect children and adults alike, shaping the way they think, feel, and interact with others.

Autism often involves differences in social communication, sensory processing, and repetitive behaviours. People with autism may find it challenging to understand social cues or manage sensory input, but they often have unique strengths, such as attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and a deep focus on areas of interest.

ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) can involve difficulties with focus, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. These challenges may show up in various areas of life, such as at work, in social situations, or in daily activities. However, many people with ADHD also notice strengths like creativity, hyperfocus on areas they are passionate about, and strong personal values.

Both autism and ADHD come with their own challenges and strengths, and understanding these conditions can help build a more supportive and inclusive environment for children and adults alike.

Hello, The World at present doesn't have any standards anymore. So I don't expect anything from anyone. However in this case I spoke to a brilliant and diligent staff member called Sarah. She was incredibly pleasant and knew her job like the back of her hand. My inquiry was dealt with a standard which I would have set myself when I used to work. So very happy to have this very pleasant surprise. Keep up the Good Work. I honestly couldn't speak higher of the service. Thanks Steve

Deborah Chadbourn was an excellent grief counsellor for me. It is five years since my first wife died, and we explored how I am feeling now, and how to navigate new and old relationships while remaining true to everything from the past. Deborah is a great listener, and provides good challenge and advice. The venue worked well for me, as did the evening appointments. Thank you!

Shabana is one of those rare people who truly listens and understands without judgement. Her support came at a time when life felt overwhelming, and she helped me slowly rebuild my confidence and sense of self. I always left each session feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded, and the tools she shared continue to help me every day. She helped me piece myself back together and reminded me that healing doesn’t mean becoming someone new — it means rediscovering who you’ve always been. I feel like my old self again, only stronger and more at peace. I can’t thank her enough.

Our work group recently had a Wellness Day and we were able to book Jemma Rosenthal and Ranaa Farooq from the Sheffield Wellness Centre for an instructional workshop. I have since received excellent feedback from group members. Jemma and Ranaa provided a very lively and well-coordinated session. We were able to cover topics such as Visualisation in a systematic manner. All along, attendees were impressed with the passion and interest displayed by both presenters. As an audience, we were certainly captivated. I can wholeheartedly recommend Jemma and Ranaa for any future events.

Came to have my session with Jemma Rosenthal here. The restrooms are so clean. There are steps that one needs to be careful of once you get onto the first floor. Fabulous place other than that, just wish it had a lift. Regarding my session: Oh wow, where do I start?! Even before meeting Jemma, i've felt at ease as there is something with the way she talks, which is so calming and reassuring. My first session was exhaustive, but I loved it. I enjoyed the relaxing Reiki in the end. She tells me that I need to tell her when I am feeling tired of talking about my depressive past and that she can approach a different way of therapy. This feels so liberating because she is basically willing to tailor the session for YOUR needs. She is a wise lady. Though she is younger than me, she is very caring, intelligent and as I said a wise person. I am so happy that our paths crossed and she is helping me come out of my bad phase. I came home and was so relaxed (I was singing freely and my husband noticed a change in the way I sing it was excellent)... I've been happy and been chuckling which is so not like me but the sad phase is jutting out of my system. I've had other private sessions for depression but wanted someone to coach my life who understands anxiety and depression. I don't remember how I found her online but glad that I did!! -Sharvani ♡☆♡ She's truly a Gem... Jem✨

I had a pregnancy massage with Fi and it was amazing! the centre is a very relaxing place and she had it warm and comfortable for me. Despite her wearing PPE, the gloves didn't affect the feel of the massage and wearing masks made me feel safe. The actual massage was so relaxing and relieved any tension I felt as Fi had asked me where any tension was. I would highly recommend her to any pregnant ladies!

As a complete beginner and not being quite as agile as I'd like I was a bit nervous about attending a Yoga class but while I may be slightly biased given Elisha of Grow Yoga is my daughter I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of her class. She's a beautiful human with a passion and energy that radiates from her. She explains everything perfectly and encourages you to just go at your own pace and enjoy. On each occasion I've been I've left feeling like the world is a much brighter place with a calmness that is rare to feel in this very busy world. If you do have the chance to try one of her classes please take it, you'll fall in love with Grow Yoga

I have had the most wonderful hypnotherapy session with Fi from the Sheffield Wellness Centre. I knew from previous chats with her that she had the perfect voice and open demeanor for hypnotherapy, and I wasn't wrong. She immediately put me at ease and I was able to open up honestly with her. The session itself was lovely, I went quickly into a trance state and, although it's early days, feel very much that the session was beneficial: I already feel lighter and more in control of the anxiety and other problems I suffer with. The Sheffield Wellness Centre is also the perfect therapeutic space. The therapy rooms are lovely and perfectly suited to a range of therapies and the studio is bright and welcoming. I'm so excited to continue my therapy with Fi and am 100% sure this will give me so much benefit, I can't recommend her and the SWC enough.

Pamper Party What a great idea! A bit of ‘me time’, in the most wonderfully relaxing surroundings. The Wellness Centre has such a relaxed, homely feel to it - much nicer than my actual home, as it is clean, tidy and welcoming! The atmosphere immediately put me at ease, I absolutely loved having time to chill out, chat and eat cake. Fi is the perfect hostess, making sure that we all had everything we needed, with her wonderful warm and caring manner. It was great to be able to choose what particular treatment or massage I wanted on the day. I surprised myself by trying something new and going for the hot stones massage, and I’m so glad I did. It was amazing, so deep and yet so gentle. It was really nice to experience my massage while listening to everyone else chatting happily, too. I completely recommend this if you are looking for the perfect excuse to have some guilt free time to yourself.

The benefits of autism and ADHD assessments

An autism or ADHD assessment can offer valuable insights for you or your child, providing clarity and a deeper understanding of your experiences. Many feel a sense of relief and reduced self-criticism as they recognise that these differences are just part of who they are. A formal diagnosis can help access the right support at work, school, or in daily life, making it easier to thrive and feel understood.

Clarity and understanding

Assessments can provide a deeper understanding of behaviours, thought patterns, and sensory sensitivities, allowing for a more accurate picture of strengths and challenges.

Access to tailored support

A formal diagnosis can unlock access to specialised resources, educational support, and accommodations, making it easier to navigate school, work, and daily life.

Informed decision-making

With a clear diagnosis, individuals and families are better equipped to make informed decisions about next steps, whether that’s seeking support, or workplace adjustments.

For further advice and support relating to autism and ADHD you may find these links helpful.

What to expect from an autism or ADHD diagnosis session

The autism and ADHD diagnostic process usually begins with an initial phone or email consultation, allowing you to decide if the service is right for you. From there, the assessment can involve several stages:

Screening assessment: This initial phase usually involves completing questionnaires that explore experiences as a child and adult, focusing on behaviours related to ADHD or autism.

Full diagnostic assessment: If the screening suggests a diagnosis may be appropriate, a more in-depth assessment will follow. The process typically includes a comprehensive report detailing the diagnosis, along with a shorter letter that can be shared with employers or academic institutions if needed.

During the sessions, you can expect to answer questions about experiences while the environment is kept comfortable and supportive, taking into account any sensory needs. If there is any anxiety around the process, assessors are trained to help individuals feel more at ease. Many find that the time passes quicker than anticipated, and often experience a sense of validation and relief by the end of the process.

Ongoing support can also be offered after the assessment to help process the diagnosis and make adjustments to everyday life.

How to choose an autism or ADHD assessor

Choosing an assessor for an ADHD or autism evaluation is a personal decision and it’s essential to feel confident and supported throughout the process.

Look for an assessor who is experienced in working with neurodiverse individuals and has a thorough understanding of both conditions. Consider their qualifications, professional background, and approach to the assessment.

It’s helpful to choose someone who prioritises a respectful, collaborative approach, making sure your insights and experiences are valued. A good assessor will create a comfortable environment, listen to your concerns, and guide you through the process with clear and open communication.

Taking the time to find the right person can make a significant difference in ensuring you feel understood and supported.
