I was embarrassed to open up about the extremity of my comfort eating but Richard made me feel comfortable about it. Even before the weight loss hypnotherapy sessions began he made a difference to my thinking by helping to change my perspective on the issue and see it as something I could get control of. 3 weeks and 3 sessions later and comfort eating has lost its grip on me, I'm making better and more conscious decisions about food and steadily losing weight. Thanks Richard.

I had a pregnancy massage with Fi and it was amazing! the centre is a very relaxing place and she had it warm and comfortable for me. Despite her wearing PPE, the gloves didn't affect the feel of the massage and wearing masks made me feel safe. The actual massage was so relaxing and relieved any tension I felt as Fi had asked me where any tension was. I would highly recommend her to any pregnant ladies!

As a complete beginner and not being quite as agile as I'd like I was a bit nervous about attending a Yoga class but while I may be slightly biased given Elisha of Grow Yoga is my daughter I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of her class. She's a beautiful human with a passion and energy that radiates from her. She explains everything perfectly and encourages you to just go at your own pace and enjoy. On each occasion I've been I've left feeling like the world is a much brighter place with a calmness that is rare to feel in this very busy world. If you do have the chance to try one of her classes please take it, you'll fall in love with Grow Yoga

I have had the most wonderful hypnotherapy session with Fi from the Sheffield Wellness Centre. I knew from previous chats with her that she had the perfect voice and open demeanor for hypnotherapy, and I wasn't wrong. She immediately put me at ease and I was able to open up honestly with her. The session itself was lovely, I went quickly into a trance state and, although it's early days, feel very much that the session was beneficial: I already feel lighter and more in control of the anxiety and other problems I suffer with. The Sheffield Wellness Centre is also the perfect therapeutic space. The therapy rooms are lovely and perfectly suited to a range of therapies and the studio is bright and welcoming. I'm so excited to continue my therapy with Fi and am 100% sure this will give me so much benefit, I can't recommend her and the SWC enough.

Pamper Party What a great idea! A bit of ‘me time’, in the most wonderfully relaxing surroundings. The Wellness Centre has such a relaxed, homely feel to it - much nicer than my actual home, as it is clean, tidy and welcoming! The atmosphere immediately put me at ease, I absolutely loved having time to chill out, chat and eat cake. Fi is the perfect hostess, making sure that we all had everything we needed, with her wonderful warm and caring manner. It was great to be able to choose what particular treatment or massage I wanted on the day. I surprised myself by trying something new and going for the hot stones massage, and I’m so glad I did. It was amazing, so deep and yet so gentle. It was really nice to experience my massage while listening to everyone else chatting happily, too. I completely recommend this if you are looking for the perfect excuse to have some guilt free time to yourself.

I've been considering hypnotherapy for some time, but have always been slightly sceptical of the claims made about it's efficacy. I spoke to Richard Hennessy, based at the centre, and was so impressed by his knowledge and openness about the process. Combined with the clear information available via the website, I have found the trust I needed to move forward with this treatment.

How does CBT work?

Negative thoughts, sensations, feelings, and actions often occur in a vicious cycle. For instance, you might criticise yourself a lot, avoid things you’re afraid of or need to do, or always focus on the negative part of a situation. If you constantly find yourself doing those things, your moods may worsen, and that can lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety.

CBT borrows from the neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and the “chunking down” concept where you take one problem and divide it into small components. Then you can use the different tools and techniques to address each chunk.

Our Sheffield CBT therapists might help you face your fears by assisting you in gradually changing the way you think or help you realise whether your self-critical thoughts are exaggerated.

How are CBT sessions structured?

CBT therapy is structured in a way that the therapist would help you identify the different elements of the problem and examine what would best work for you. Typically, it involves:

The first session: This is an opportunity for the CBT therapist and the client to meet and have a detailed discussion of the past and present situations. You and your therapist might work through exercises to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and discuss what the CBT would focus on and the end goal of the process. Think of it as a kind of fact-finding mission for both of you to see what the scope of the project is.

The subsequent sessions: Generally, subsequent sessions may involve a catch-up on what has occurred since the last session to allow you and the therapist to be on the same page and maintain the flow from one session to another. You may collaboratively set topics for the session, assign new homework, and ask for feedback on how to improve the next session.

CBT FAQs

We’ve gathered our most frequently asked questions about cognitive behavioural therapy in Sheffield, putting them all in one place for your convenience.

Can't find what you're looking for?
What is the overall structure of the CBT process?

CBT is usually done for a limited number of sessions, unlike therapies like counselling or psychotherapy which can often be more long term in nature.

On average, people having CBT will have around twelve sessions, usually one hour or so at a time. These sessions would usually be weekly. There is always the potential to extend the number of sessions if you and your therapist think that would be helpful.

Medical News Today offers more information about how CBT works.

Is cognitive behaviour therapy effective?

Yes! There is a great deal of information showing that CBT is helpful for many psychological issues. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT as an evidence-based treatment for psychological problems such as anxiety and depression. CBT can also help with other psychological issues, including panic attacks, phobias, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorder, addictions, chronic pain, attention problems (such as ADHD), bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

What’s more, CBT has been found to be just as effective as medications, and sometimes it can even make you feel much better than if you were taking medication. That is because CBT gives you skills that you may use to manage future problems.

What kind of health professionals use CBT?

CBT is a set of tools that can be used by a wide range of health professionals. There are some people who purely train in CBT and offer only that therapy. There are other health professionals who offer CBT as a part of what they do but also offer other techniques or services. These include:

  • Clinical psychologists
  • Cognitive psychotherapists
  • Psychotherapists
  • As a part of dialectical behaviour therapy

Most people who provide CBT therapy will have a post graduate diploma in CBT and the Sheffield Hallam University postgraduate diploma in CBT is actually one of the best in the country so as a result this part of South Yorkshire is a bit of a hotbed for great cognitive behavioural therapy specialists.

Is CBT therapy confidential?
Our accredited CBT therapists will treat the sessions with the utmost confidentiality. That means we protect and respect your rights, and whatever is discussed in the sessions won’t be shared with anyone else unless you give the therapist permission to do so. Our specialists adhere to the BABCP standards of conduct and ethics when offering CBT as a treatment. That includes discussing our confidentiality policy during your first appointment.
What happens in the first CBT session?

In the first session (or maybe the first few sessions) there would be a fairly detailed discussion of past and present situations where the problem state was experienced.

A plan would be made between client and therapist regarding what the therapy sessions will focus on and what the end goal is for the process.

What happens in treatment sessions?

Once you have had the first session (or two) looking at what it is that you want to change and what you want to achieve your CBT therapist will help you to begin to “chunk down” what was a big problem into its smaller parts and look at how they fit together. This can be done through a discussion but may also require you to keep a record of what you have thought or felt about the problem so it can be discussed at the next session.

By looking at this information together you can begin to assess the separate chunks of behaviour and really examine if they serve some kind of purpose to you now and in the future or if they are out-dated, unneeded and unnecessary. The things that are no longer needed could lead you to better alternative approaches which could dramatically change future situations.

What does the ‘homework’ involve?

The work to be done at home would be discussed at the end of each sessions so your would have a clear plan as to what is to be done and what the benefits of doing it could be.

You may be asked to keep a diary of specific thoughts or behaviours or what happens at certain times or places that were a challenge in the past.

You may be asked to write down features of what you would like the future you (who is feeling better) might be doing and how they would be living their life. By getting more familiar with your goal you could find it is more appealing to do the things that move you towards that goal.

Humans are creatures of habit and making changes can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. Having a therapist who is there to help, support and guide you could make that process of change a lot easier than it might otherwise have been. By practising the things you learn through cognitive behavioural therapy sessions you could find you develop tools that could help you for the rest of your life.

How can CBT sessions be delivered?

Sessions can be delivered in several ways. These include:

One on one: Just you and the CBT therapist. Your sessions may happen at a private clinic, at the doctor’s office, outside or even at your house. Different therapists work in different ways so check which are available.

Group sessions: Sometimes sessions may be done with a group of people who have all been experiencing the same issue. These sessions are often cheaper than one on one sessions but some people aren’t comfortable discussing personal issues in front of strangers.

Online: CBT is becoming more common as an online process and the benefit of this is that it can be done at your own pace, at a time that suits you.

Will I need to do exposure therapy?

Exposure therapy can be a part of CBT sessions but isn’t necessarily used as a part of everyone’s therapy. As a technique, exposure therapy is about facing fears and gradually becoming increasingly exposed to them.

The technique focuses on bringing in a small amount of the issue that has caused problems for you in the past. Just enough to provoke a physical reaction. Your therapist would then help you to be with that discomfort and to allow it to pass in safety. This process is repeated in the treatment session itself and as part of homework.

In time the majority of people find that after a small amount of practise that their anxiety or fear does not climb as high as it did when thinking about or experiencing the same thoughts. Many people find the anxiety also doesn’t last for as long as it did.

Once this has been worked through you then focus on an aspect of the problem that is more severe or provokes a stronger reaction and repeat the process to reduce and dampen the reaction.

What might I learn through CBT?

There are a whole range of possible changes or benefits that you might experience as a result of CBT. Here are just some of those possibilities…

  • Understand past triggers better
  • Greater awareness of the power of the things you say to yourself in your own head
  • Not accepting unhelpful or critical self-talk
  • Learn to tell the difference between anxious or fearful thoughts and reality
  • Learn how to reframe what happened in the past and see things differently
  • Develop greater insight or empathy for other people’s circumstances and understand them better
  • Become more aware of your own thoughts and feelings and notice their effect on you
  • Learn to set goals and learn how to focus on achieving them
What are some of the alternatives to CBT?
Cognitive behavioural therapy is very effective for some people but for others, it is not what they are looking for and they need an alternative therapy. Different people are different but it is possible that for those who don’t like or don’t want CBT that hypnotherapy or counselling could be helpful.
Hypnotherapy: CBT is a fairly quick process in most cases (about 12 sessions are needed on average) but hypnotherapy is even faster. Some people have just three or four sessions of hypnosis. The reason the process is even faster is that CBT focuses on dealing with the conscious mind which can be a lengthy negotiation.
Hypnotherapy on the other hand taps into much more of the unconscious and some people find change happening without really even trying to make change happen. This doesn’t happen for everyone but it’s not uncommon. Many of the techniques used consciously in CBT are also used unconsciously in hypnotherapy.
Counselling: For some people, counselling is a better fit. It can be seen by some as being lower intensity than CBT and therefore more manageable. Some people really don’t like the idea of exposure therapy through CBT as their problem seems so big and scary they can’t face the idea of tackling it so directly.
For these people, counselling could be ideal.
How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is an individual so there is no categorical answer to this question. Some people will see a CBT practitioner for 6 sessions because that is how many the NHS have allocated for that person. It is possible to see improvement within this time scale but some people may need more sessions than this. Each session usually lasts just under an hour. Sessions are usually held at weekly or fortnightly intervals.

Part of CBT is practise which is done in the time between face to face sessions. This homework may involve diary keeping or practising thought or breathing techniques.

What if the symptoms come back?
There is no guarantee with any therapy or technique that the problem won’t come back. That being said the techniques developed during CBT sessions can be used in future if symptoms return. Familiarity with the techniques and with being symptom-free will increase the chances of remaining so in the future.
