Children can struggle with their emotions, experiences and changes in their lives just as adults can. Child therapy in Sheffield offers a safe and supportive space where children can express themselves, make sense of how they’re feeling and get the support they need in a way that feels right for their age.

Table of Contents

What is child therapy?

Child therapy provides children with a safe and supportive space to explore emotions, experiences or difficulties they may be facing. Just like adults, children can be affected by anxiety, loss, relationships, changes at home or school, difficult experiences and worries about themselves or the world around them.

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling, and therapy doesn’t have to rely on talking alone. Depending on the child and the therapist they work with, sessions may include conversation alongside creative or expressive approaches such as drawing, colouring, art or sand work. Some children naturally prefer to talk, while others find it easier to communicate and explore their feelings in different ways.

There is no single approach that suits every child. Therapy can be adapted around their age, personality, needs and what helps them feel most comfortable. Our therapists include counsellors, art therapists and therapists who use other integrative approaches, giving families different options when considering what might suit their child.

The aim isn’t to make a child behave differently or tell them how they should feel. Therapy gives them a space of their own where they can feel heard and understood, while helping them develop greater confidence, understanding and ways of coping with the things they find difficult.

If you’re looking for child therapy in Sheffield, we can help you explore the different approaches available and find a therapist who may be a good fit for your child.

Who is child therapy for?

Child therapy can support children experiencing emotional, behavioural or social difficulties, as well as those going through changes or experiences they may be finding hard to understand or manage. A child doesn’t need to be in crisis or have a diagnosis to benefit from therapy. Sometimes parents simply notice that something doesn’t seem quite right, or that their child could benefit from having a safe space and someone outside the family to talk or express themselves with.

Excellent service - I had an amazing experience with Shabana right from the start. I was unsure about therapy when we started but Shabana is so good at what she does, she made me feel really comfortable and at ease, I felt really proud of myself for having done this and obviously her services had a big role to play. I'd highly recommend their services to anyone who is considering taking their first step. Good luck x

I can’t recommend Deb highly enough. I initially delayed seeking therapy, but I’m so glad I eventually took that step and found her. Deb helped me work through the grief of losing my dad, as well as some difficult childhood issues that I hadn’t fully understood or dealt with. She had a wonderful way of getting to the source of things in a safe, comfortable and completely non judgemental way. I always felt listened to and understood. The biggest difference for me is how much she has changed the way I think and approach things. She has helped me understand myself better and given me a much healthier perspective, which has made such a positive difference to daily life. It’s such a shame that I’m moving away and won’t be able to continue seeing Deb, as I would have happily carried on. I’m incredibly grateful for all the help and support she has given me, and I’ll take everything I’ve learned with me going forward. Thank you, Deb, for everything.

Every time I get a massage from Fi at the Wellness Centre, I've come away feeling like a different person. Fi not only has magic healing hands that make you feel wonderful with every touch, but she treats you with such calm and gentle compassion that this is a really holistic therapeutic experience that makes you feel cared for and special for one whole hour. Definitely recommend

Hello, The World at present doesn't have any standards anymore. So I don't expect anything from anyone. However in this case I spoke to a brilliant and diligent staff member called Sarah. She was incredibly pleasant and knew her job like the back of her hand. My inquiry was dealt with a standard which I would have set myself when I used to work. So very happy to have this very pleasant surprise. Keep up the Good Work. I honestly couldn't speak higher of the service. Thanks Steve

Deborah Chadbourn was an excellent grief counsellor for me. It is five years since my first wife died, and we explored how I am feeling now, and how to navigate new and old relationships while remaining true to everything from the past. Deborah is a great listener, and provides good challenge and advice. The venue worked well for me, as did the evening appointments. Thank you!

Shabana is one of those rare people who truly listens and understands without judgement. Her support came at a time when life felt overwhelming, and she helped me slowly rebuild my confidence and sense of self. I always left each session feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded, and the tools she shared continue to help me every day. She helped me piece myself back together and reminded me that healing doesn’t mean becoming someone new — it means rediscovering who you’ve always been. I feel like my old self again, only stronger and more at peace. I can’t thank her enough.

Our work group recently had a Wellness Day and we were able to book Jemma Rosenthal and Ranaa Farooq from the Sheffield Wellness Centre for an instructional workshop. I have since received excellent feedback from group members. Jemma and Ranaa provided a very lively and well-coordinated session. We were able to cover topics such as Visualisation in a systematic manner. All along, attendees were impressed with the passion and interest displayed by both presenters. As an audience, we were certainly captivated. I can wholeheartedly recommend Jemma and Ranaa for any future events.

Came to have my session with Jemma Rosenthal here. The restrooms are so clean. There are steps that one needs to be careful of once you get onto the first floor. Fabulous place other than that, just wish it had a lift. Regarding my session: Oh wow, where do I start?! Even before meeting Jemma, i've felt at ease as there is something with the way she talks, which is so calming and reassuring. My first session was exhaustive, but I loved it. I enjoyed the relaxing Reiki in the end. She tells me that I need to tell her when I am feeling tired of talking about my depressive past and that she can approach a different way of therapy. This feels so liberating because she is basically willing to tailor the session for YOUR needs. She is a wise lady. Though she is younger than me, she is very caring, intelligent and as I said a wise person. I am so happy that our paths crossed and she is helping me come out of my bad phase. I came home and was so relaxed (I was singing freely and my husband noticed a change in the way I sing it was excellent)... I've been happy and been chuckling which is so not like me but the sad phase is jutting out of my system. I've had other private sessions for depression but wanted someone to coach my life who understands anxiety and depression. I don't remember how I found her online but glad that I did!! -Sharvani ♡☆♡ She's truly a Gem... Jem✨

As a complete beginner and not being quite as agile as I'd like I was a bit nervous about attending a Yoga class but while I may be slightly biased given Elisha of Grow Yoga is my daughter I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of her class. She's a beautiful human with a passion and energy that radiates from her. She explains everything perfectly and encourages you to just go at your own pace and enjoy. On each occasion I've been I've left feeling like the world is a much brighter place with a calmness that is rare to feel in this very busy world. If you do have the chance to try one of her classes please take it, you'll fall in love with Grow Yoga

I have had the most wonderful hypnotherapy session with Fi from the Sheffield Wellness Centre. I knew from previous chats with her that she had the perfect voice and open demeanor for hypnotherapy, and I wasn't wrong. She immediately put me at ease and I was able to open up honestly with her. The session itself was lovely, I went quickly into a trance state and, although it's early days, feel very much that the session was beneficial: I already feel lighter and more in control of the anxiety and other problems I suffer with. The Sheffield Wellness Centre is also the perfect therapeutic space. The therapy rooms are lovely and perfectly suited to a range of therapies and the studio is bright and welcoming. I'm so excited to continue my therapy with Fi and am 100% sure this will give me so much benefit, I can't recommend her and the SWC enough.

What can child therapy help with?

Child therapy can help with a wide range of emotional, social and behavioural difficulties, including anxiety, low confidence, bereavement, family changes, friendship difficulties, bullying, school-related worries and experiences that have been upsetting or difficult to process. It can also support children who are struggling with big emotions, changes in behaviour or expressing what is going on for them, giving them a safe space to explore their feelings in a way that feels comfortable and appropriate for them.
Child therapy gives children a space where they can feel safe, heard and understood. With the right support and an approach that feels comfortable for them, they can explore difficult feelings and experiences, build confidence and develop ways to cope with the things they find challenging.

Meet our child therapists

We have child therapists ready to support you on your wellness journey. After selecting who you would like to work with, simply reach out using the contact form on their profile page, and they will get in touch to discuss your needs and how they can help you.  How to book?

How to book

If you know which child therapist you’d like to work with, get in touch with them using the form on their profile page to discuss the next steps.

The benefits of child therapy

Child therapy can give children the space and support to understand themselves, work through difficulties and develop skills that can help them as they grow.
Understanding emotions

Children don’t always understand why they feel or react in certain ways. Therapy can help them recognise and explore their emotions in a safe, age-appropriate way.

Building confidence

Therapy can help children develop greater confidence in themselves, their feelings and their ability to cope with situations they find difficult or overwhelming.

Developing ways to cope

Children can learn helpful ways to manage worries, difficult emotions and challenging experiences, building skills they can draw on both now and in the future.

Different approaches to child therapy

There is no single type of therapy that works for every child. Our therapists bring different training and specialisms, including counselling, art therapy and integrative approaches designed specifically for children and young people.

It can also be helpful to tell your therapist about your child beyond the difficulties they’re experiencing. Whether they love Marvel, dinosaurs, a favourite animal, football or drawing, their interests can help the therapist get to know them and may be incorporated into sessions through activities such as colouring, art or conversation. Small, familiar things can help therapy feel more comfortable and personal to your child.

What is the parent's role in child therapy?

Parents and carers can share their concerns, observations and any important background with the therapist, helping them understand what’s been happening for your child. How you are involved after this will depend on your child’s age, needs and the therapist’s approach.

Your child also needs to know that therapy is a safe and private space. What they talk about in their sessions will usually remain confidential and won’t routinely be reported back to parents or carers, unless there is a safeguarding concern. Some of our therapists also offer individual and family therapy, so additional support can be explored where this would be helpful.

Child Therapy FAQs

We’ve gathered our most frequently asked questions about child therapy in Sheffield, putting them all in one place for your convenience.

Can't find what you're looking for?
What age can a child start therapy?
Our therapists work with different age groups, with some offering child therapy from age 5. The ages each therapist works with are shown on their individual profile, helping you find someone appropriate for your child’s age and needs.
Do I stay with my child during their therapy session?
This will depend on your child’s age, needs and the therapist’s approach. In some cases a parent or carer may be involved at the beginning of a session or during initial appointments, while other children may benefit from having their own space with their therapist. Your therapist will discuss what feels most appropriate with you.
Will the therapist tell me what my child talks about?
Children need to feel that therapy is a safe and private space. Your therapist can listen to your concerns and observations, but what your child shares during their sessions will usually remain confidential. If the therapist has a safeguarding concern or believes your child or someone else may be at risk, they may need to share relevant information in line with their professional responsibilities.
How do I know which type of therapy is right for my child?
You don’t need to know before getting in touch. Our therapists use a range of approaches, including counselling, art therapy and integrative therapies for children and young people. Their profiles explain how they work, or you can contact us and we can help you explore which options may suit your child.
What if my child doesn’t want to talk or engage in therapy?
That’s completely OK. Children don’t have to arrive ready to talk about difficult feelings or experiences. A therapist can take time to build trust and get to know your child, and sessions may include creative activities or their own interests to help them feel more comfortable. Therapy can progress at a pace that feels manageable for them.
