Every family goes through difficult times. When relationships feel strained or communication becomes harder, family therapy in Sheffield offers a supportive space to understand one another better and find a way forward together.

Table of Contents

What is family therapy?

Family therapy is a form of talking therapy that brings family members together to explore difficulties affecting their relationships or family life. Rather than focusing on one person as the problem, it looks at how experiences, communication and patterns within the family may be affecting everyone involved.

Every family is different, and there is no single reason to seek family therapy. You might be dealing with frequent conflict, changes within the family, difficulties between parents and children, separation or divorce, bereavement, illness, blended family relationships or simply feeling that you have stopped understanding one another.

Sessions offer a supportive, neutral space where family members can talk openly and hear each other’s perspectives. Your therapist can help you recognise unhelpful patterns, communicate more effectively and explore changes that could make family life and relationships feel more manageable.

Family therapy does not require everyone to agree or decide who is right or wrong. The aim is to help you better understand what is happening between you and find ways of moving forward that work for your family.

If you’re looking for family therapy in Sheffield, our therapists can work with different family relationships and circumstances, helping you have conversations that may feel difficult to navigate alone.

Who is family therapy for?

Family therapy is for families who want to understand each other better, work through difficulties or strengthen their relationships. Family therapy can involve the whole family, or just some family members, and there’s no particular age or stage of life when it can be helpful. It might be parents with young children or teenagers, an adult child with a parent, siblings, or several generations of a family coming together.

Excellent service - I had an amazing experience with Shabana right from the start. I was unsure about therapy when we started but Shabana is so good at what she does, she made me feel really comfortable and at ease, I felt really proud of myself for having done this and obviously her services had a big role to play. I'd highly recommend their services to anyone who is considering taking their first step. Good luck x

I can’t recommend Deb highly enough. I initially delayed seeking therapy, but I’m so glad I eventually took that step and found her. Deb helped me work through the grief of losing my dad, as well as some difficult childhood issues that I hadn’t fully understood or dealt with. She had a wonderful way of getting to the source of things in a safe, comfortable and completely non judgemental way. I always felt listened to and understood. The biggest difference for me is how much she has changed the way I think and approach things. She has helped me understand myself better and given me a much healthier perspective, which has made such a positive difference to daily life. It’s such a shame that I’m moving away and won’t be able to continue seeing Deb, as I would have happily carried on. I’m incredibly grateful for all the help and support she has given me, and I’ll take everything I’ve learned with me going forward. Thank you, Deb, for everything.

Every time I get a massage from Fi at the Wellness Centre, I've come away feeling like a different person. Fi not only has magic healing hands that make you feel wonderful with every touch, but she treats you with such calm and gentle compassion that this is a really holistic therapeutic experience that makes you feel cared for and special for one whole hour. Definitely recommend

Hello, The World at present doesn't have any standards anymore. So I don't expect anything from anyone. However in this case I spoke to a brilliant and diligent staff member called Sarah. She was incredibly pleasant and knew her job like the back of her hand. My inquiry was dealt with a standard which I would have set myself when I used to work. So very happy to have this very pleasant surprise. Keep up the Good Work. I honestly couldn't speak higher of the service. Thanks Steve

Deborah Chadbourn was an excellent grief counsellor for me. It is five years since my first wife died, and we explored how I am feeling now, and how to navigate new and old relationships while remaining true to everything from the past. Deborah is a great listener, and provides good challenge and advice. The venue worked well for me, as did the evening appointments. Thank you!

Shabana is one of those rare people who truly listens and understands without judgement. Her support came at a time when life felt overwhelming, and she helped me slowly rebuild my confidence and sense of self. I always left each session feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded, and the tools she shared continue to help me every day. She helped me piece myself back together and reminded me that healing doesn’t mean becoming someone new — it means rediscovering who you’ve always been. I feel like my old self again, only stronger and more at peace. I can’t thank her enough.

Our work group recently had a Wellness Day and we were able to book Jemma Rosenthal and Ranaa Farooq from the Sheffield Wellness Centre for an instructional workshop. I have since received excellent feedback from group members. Jemma and Ranaa provided a very lively and well-coordinated session. We were able to cover topics such as Visualisation in a systematic manner. All along, attendees were impressed with the passion and interest displayed by both presenters. As an audience, we were certainly captivated. I can wholeheartedly recommend Jemma and Ranaa for any future events.

Came to have my session with Jemma Rosenthal here. The restrooms are so clean. There are steps that one needs to be careful of once you get onto the first floor. Fabulous place other than that, just wish it had a lift. Regarding my session: Oh wow, where do I start?! Even before meeting Jemma, i've felt at ease as there is something with the way she talks, which is so calming and reassuring. My first session was exhaustive, but I loved it. I enjoyed the relaxing Reiki in the end. She tells me that I need to tell her when I am feeling tired of talking about my depressive past and that she can approach a different way of therapy. This feels so liberating because she is basically willing to tailor the session for YOUR needs. She is a wise lady. Though she is younger than me, she is very caring, intelligent and as I said a wise person. I am so happy that our paths crossed and she is helping me come out of my bad phase. I came home and was so relaxed (I was singing freely and my husband noticed a change in the way I sing it was excellent)... I've been happy and been chuckling which is so not like me but the sad phase is jutting out of my system. I've had other private sessions for depression but wanted someone to coach my life who understands anxiety and depression. I don't remember how I found her online but glad that I did!! -Sharvani ♡☆♡ She's truly a Gem... Jem✨

I had a pregnancy massage with Fi and it was amazing! the centre is a very relaxing place and she had it warm and comfortable for me. Despite her wearing PPE, the gloves didn't affect the feel of the massage and wearing masks made me feel safe. The actual massage was so relaxing and relieved any tension I felt as Fi had asked me where any tension was. I would highly recommend her to any pregnant ladies!

As a complete beginner and not being quite as agile as I'd like I was a bit nervous about attending a Yoga class but while I may be slightly biased given Elisha of Grow Yoga is my daughter I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of her class. She's a beautiful human with a passion and energy that radiates from her. She explains everything perfectly and encourages you to just go at your own pace and enjoy. On each occasion I've been I've left feeling like the world is a much brighter place with a calmness that is rare to feel in this very busy world. If you do have the chance to try one of her classes please take it, you'll fall in love with Grow Yoga

I have had the most wonderful hypnotherapy session with Fi from the Sheffield Wellness Centre. I knew from previous chats with her that she had the perfect voice and open demeanor for hypnotherapy, and I wasn't wrong. She immediately put me at ease and I was able to open up honestly with her. The session itself was lovely, I went quickly into a trance state and, although it's early days, feel very much that the session was beneficial: I already feel lighter and more in control of the anxiety and other problems I suffer with. The Sheffield Wellness Centre is also the perfect therapeutic space. The therapy rooms are lovely and perfectly suited to a range of therapies and the studio is bright and welcoming. I'm so excited to continue my therapy with Fi and am 100% sure this will give me so much benefit, I can't recommend her and the SWC enough.

What can family therapy help with?

Family therapy can help when a change, revelation or difficult situation affects the whole family in different ways, bringing conflicting emotions, uncertainty or changes to relationships and family roles. It can also support families through separation, parenting disagreements, strained parent and child relationships, blended families, bereavement, illness and recurring conflict, giving everyone space to feel heard and explore how to move forward together.
Family therapy offers a supportive space where everyone has the opportunity to be heard. With your therapist’s guidance, you can begin to understand each other’s experiences, work through difficult conversations and find a way forward that feels right for your family.

Meet our family therapists

How to book

If you know which family therapist you’d like to work with, get in touch with them using the form on their profile page to discuss the next steps.

The benefits of family therapy

Family therapy can help create meaningful change by looking beyond individual difficulties and exploring how the family functions and relates as a whole.
Greater understanding

Family members can experience the same situation very differently. Therapy creates space to hear those different perspectives, helping you better understand each other’s feelings, needs and reactions.

Healthier family dynamics

Therapy can help uncover patterns, roles and behaviours that may be contributing to tension within the family. Recognising these dynamics can make it easier to develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

Navigating change together

Families can be deeply affected by unexpected changes, difficult decisions and periods of uncertainty. Family therapy can help everyone process what is happening, adjust to changing relationships and find ways to move forward together.

What happens in family therapy?

Your first sessions give your therapist time to understand your family, what has brought you to therapy and what each person hopes might change. They will help make space for different perspectives, including feelings or experiences that may have been difficult to talk about at home.

Sessions might involve the whole family, particular family members or, where helpful, individual sessions alongside your work together. Your therapist will discuss this with you and suggest an approach based on your family’s circumstances rather than expecting everyone to attend every session.

How many family therapy sessions will we need?

There is no set number of sessions, as every family and situation is different. Some families come to therapy to work through a particular difficulty, while others benefit from having more time to explore longstanding or complex issues.

Your therapist will regularly review how things are progressing with you and whether further sessions would be helpful. The frequency and number of sessions can be adapted as your family’s needs change.

Book a callback

Schedule a callback at a time that suits you for a friendly chat about how we can help you on your journey to wellness.

Family Therapy FAQs

We’ve gathered our most frequently asked questions about family therapy in Sheffield, putting them all in one place for your convenience.

Can't find what you're looking for?
What is the difference between family therapy and family counselling?
The terms family therapy and family counselling are often used interchangeably. Both involve working with family relationships rather than focusing solely on one individual. The exact approach will depend on your therapist, their training and what your family needs help with.
Does the whole family need to attend family therapy?
Not necessarily. Family therapy can involve the whole family, but it may also include different combinations of family members at different times. In some circumstances, your therapist may suggest individual sessions too. They will discuss with you who would benefit from being involved and how sessions could work for your family.
Can family therapy help if one family member does not want to attend?
Yes. It is quite common for one person to feel unsure about therapy or not want to take part. Family therapy may still be helpful with the family members who are willing to attend, as changes in how people communicate, respond and relate to one another can influence the wider family dynamic.
Can family therapy help with adult family relationships?
Absolutely. Family therapy is not just for parents with young children. It can support adult children and parents, siblings, extended families and families navigating changing roles, longstanding difficulties or significant events later in life.
When might family therapy be helpful?
You do not need to wait until your family reaches crisis point. Family therapy can be helpful when conversations repeatedly become difficult, relationships feel strained, circumstances have changed or family members are struggling to understand each other. It can also provide support when a significant event or revelation has affected several members of the family in different ways.
