Myofacial release is a gentle yet effective hands-on therapy that involves the application of sustained pressure into the body’s fascial system to decrease pain, improve motion and release physical and emotional trauma.

What is myofascial release?

Fascia is like the body’s wrapping paper. It’s everywhere, wrapping around all our muscles, bones, and organs. Despite being super important, medical folks didn’t pay it much attention for a long time. Turns out, it can send messages faster than our nerves!

When our fascia gets tight or wonky, it’s often due to things like swelling, injuries, or even surgery. This can create a lot of pressure, which usually means pain and feeling not-so-great. The tricky part? Fancy tests like MRIs or x-rays can’t really spot these fascia issues, making it tough for doctors to figure out what’s causing the pain. It’s like a mystery inside our bodies!

Think of fascia like a spider’s web, holding everything together. When it’s happy and stretchy, we move smoothly. But when it’s tight or stuck, that’s when problems start. Myofascial release therapy can help loosen it up, easing the achiness and helping us move better.

If you’re looking for myofascial release in Sheffield, our massage therapists could help you ease pain, improve mobility, and promote overall wellness. By working on the fascia, they can target those tight spots and help restore balance to your body. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, dealing with chronic pain, or just want to feel better in your body, myofascial release could be the missing piece.

It’s suitable for all ages and can help with issues like back pain, headaches, or injury recovery. Whether you need relief from persistent discomfort or improved mobility, this therapy can provide lasting benefits.

I've visited the Centre for a massage and I'm about to begin hiring the rooms myself as a practitioner. The rooms are really beautifully done out, with a lot of care and attention to detail. Richard has been very supportive and helpful in getting registered and started up.

I was embarrassed to open up about the extremity of my comfort eating but Richard made me feel comfortable about it. Even before the weight loss hypnotherapy sessions began he made a difference to my thinking by helping to change my perspective on the issue and see it as something I could get control of. 3 weeks and 3 sessions later and comfort eating has lost its grip on me, I'm making better and more conscious decisions about food and steadily losing weight. Thanks Richard.

I've had two massages with Fi at the Wellness Centre 'so far' and both times I've come away feeling like a different person. Fi not only has magic healing hands that make you feel wonderful with every touch, but she treats you with such calm and gentle compassion that this is a really holistic therapeutic experience. Definitely recommend

I had a pregnancy massage with Fi and it was amazing! the centre is a very relaxing place and she had it warm and comfortable for me. Despite her wearing PPE, the gloves didn't affect the feel of the massage and wearing masks made me feel safe. The actual massage was so relaxing and relieved any tension I felt as Fi had asked me where any tension was. I would highly recommend her to any pregnant ladies!

As a complete beginner and not being quite as agile as I'd like I was a bit nervous about attending a Yoga class but while I may be slightly biased given Elisha of Grow Yoga is my daughter I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of her class. She's a beautiful human with a passion and energy that radiates from her. She explains everything perfectly and encourages you to just go at your own pace and enjoy. On each occasion I've been I've left feeling like the world is a much brighter place with a calmness that is rare to feel in this very busy world. If you do have the chance to try one of her classes please take it, you'll fall in love with Grow Yoga

I have had the most wonderful hypnotherapy session with Fi from the Sheffield Wellness Centre. I knew from previous chats with her that she had the perfect voice and open demeanor for hypnotherapy, and I wasn't wrong. She immediately put me at ease and I was able to open up honestly with her. The session itself was lovely, I went quickly into a trance state and, although it's early days, feel very much that the session was beneficial: I already feel lighter and more in control of the anxiety and other problems I suffer with. The Sheffield Wellness Centre is also the perfect therapeutic space. The therapy rooms are lovely and perfectly suited to a range of therapies and the studio is bright and welcoming. I'm so excited to continue my therapy with Fi and am 100% sure this will give me so much benefit, I can't recommend her and the SWC enough.

Pamper Party What a great idea! A bit of ‘me time’, in the most wonderfully relaxing surroundings. The Wellness Centre has such a relaxed, homely feel to it - much nicer than my actual home, as it is clean, tidy and welcoming! The atmosphere immediately put me at ease, I absolutely loved having time to chill out, chat and eat cake. Fi is the perfect hostess, making sure that we all had everything we needed, with her wonderful warm and caring manner. It was great to be able to choose what particular treatment or massage I wanted on the day. I surprised myself by trying something new and going for the hot stones massage, and I’m so glad I did. It was amazing, so deep and yet so gentle. It was really nice to experience my massage while listening to everyone else chatting happily, too. I completely recommend this if you are looking for the perfect excuse to have some guilt free time to yourself.

I've been considering hypnotherapy for some time, but have always been slightly sceptical of the claims made about it's efficacy. I spoke to Richard Hennessy, based at the centre, and was so impressed by his knowledge and openness about the process. Combined with the clear information available via the website, I have found the trust I needed to move forward with this treatment.

The benefits of myofascial release

Myofascial release offers a range of benefits that can positively impact various aspects of your well-being:
Sports injuries

Myofascial release can speed up recovery, reduce inflammation, and improve flexibility after sports-related strains and injuries.

Pain management

By releasing tension in the fascia, myofascial therapy can alleviate chronic pain conditions, promoting long-lasting relief and improved mobility.

General wellbeing

Incorporating myofascial release into your routine can enhance overall health, promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and supporting a balanced mind-body connection.

What happens in a myofascial release session?

MFR therapists approach each patient and session uniquely, employing various techniques like cross-hand releases, transverse holds, unwinding, stretches, and mobilisations. These methods can be combined with other therapies such as deep tissue or therapeutic massage.

Each myofascial release (MFR) session is conducted directly on the skin without oils or tools. This hands-on approach allows therapists to pinpoint fascial restrictions and apply appropriate pressure for effective releases.

Following a session, individuals often experience increased comfort and mobility. While a single treatment can be beneficial, a series of sessions can be transformative, leading to lasting changes in how one feels in their own body.

What is soft tissue therapy?

Soft tissue therapy encompasses a range of advanced hands-on techniques designed to assess, treat, and manage minor or chronic injuries and conditions. These therapies target muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the myofascia of the musculoskeletal system.

During a session, techniques may include postural assessment, range of motion testing, muscle testing, soft tissue release, mobilisation massage, and muscle energy techniques (METs). This comprehensive approach may also incorporate neuromuscular therapy (trigger point therapy), joint mobilisation, ‘deep’ tissue massage, and positional release.

A proficient soft tissue therapist typically has a strong background in sports massage and may integrate some myofascial techniques. However, a ‘Myofascial Therapist’ undergoes specialized advanced training in myofascial release, particularly beneficial for clients recovering from physical or emotional trauma.

Soft tissue therapy is inclusive and beneficial for everyone, not just elite athletes. It’s a versatile approach to address various injuries and improve overall musculoskeletal health.
