What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, often referred to simply as therapy, is a collaborative process between a trained therapist and an individual seeking support. It involves exploring and understanding thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and patterns of relating to oneself and others.

Psychotherapists employ various approaches, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, and humanistic therapy, tailored to the individual’s needs and goals. By providing a safe and non-judgmental space, psychotherapy facilitates self-reflection, self-awareness, and empowerment, empowering individuals to navigate life’s challenges, improve relationships, and cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves.

Additionally, psychotherapists may integrate expressive arts therapies, such as art therapy or music therapy, to provide alternative avenues for self-expression and healing. These diverse approaches underscore the adaptability of psychotherapy to meet the unique needs and preferences of each individual, enhancing its effectiveness in promoting mental health and well-being.

Psychotherapy and counselling share similarities as they both involve talking with a trained professional to address emotional and mental health concerns. However, psychotherapy typically delves deeper into exploring thoughts, emotions, and behavioural patterns over an extended period. It often involves exploring past experiences and how they influence present behaviours, aiming for long-term insight and change.

Hello, The World at present doesn't have any standards anymore. So I don't expect anything from anyone. However in this case I spoke to a brilliant and diligent staff member called Sarah. She was incredibly pleasant and knew her job like the back of her hand. My inquiry was dealt with a standard which I would have set myself when I used to work. So very happy to have this very pleasant surprise. Keep up the Good Work. I honestly couldn't speak higher of the service. Thanks Steve

Deborah Chadbourn was an excellent grief counsellor for me. It is five years since my first wife died, and we explored how I am feeling now, and how to navigate new and old relationships while remaining true to everything from the past. Deborah is a great listener, and provides good challenge and advice. The venue worked well for me, as did the evening appointments. Thank you!

Shabana is one of those rare people who truly listens and understands without judgement. Her support came at a time when life felt overwhelming, and she helped me slowly rebuild my confidence and sense of self. I always left each session feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded, and the tools she shared continue to help me every day. She helped me piece myself back together and reminded me that healing doesn’t mean becoming someone new — it means rediscovering who you’ve always been. I feel like my old self again, only stronger and more at peace. I can’t thank her enough.

Our work group recently had a Wellness Day and we were able to book Jemma Rosenthal and Ranaa Farooq from the Sheffield Wellness Centre for an instructional workshop. I have since received excellent feedback from group members. Jemma and Ranaa provided a very lively and well-coordinated session. We were able to cover topics such as Visualisation in a systematic manner. All along, attendees were impressed with the passion and interest displayed by both presenters. As an audience, we were certainly captivated. I can wholeheartedly recommend Jemma and Ranaa for any future events.

Came to have my session with Jemma Rosenthal here. The restrooms are so clean. There are steps that one needs to be careful of once you get onto the first floor. Fabulous place other than that, just wish it had a lift. Regarding my session: Oh wow, where do I start?! Even before meeting Jemma, i've felt at ease as there is something with the way she talks, which is so calming and reassuring. My first session was exhaustive, but I loved it. I enjoyed the relaxing Reiki in the end. She tells me that I need to tell her when I am feeling tired of talking about my depressive past and that she can approach a different way of therapy. This feels so liberating because she is basically willing to tailor the session for YOUR needs. She is a wise lady. Though she is younger than me, she is very caring, intelligent and as I said a wise person. I am so happy that our paths crossed and she is helping me come out of my bad phase. I came home and was so relaxed (I was singing freely and my husband noticed a change in the way I sing it was excellent)... I've been happy and been chuckling which is so not like me but the sad phase is jutting out of my system. I've had other private sessions for depression but wanted someone to coach my life who understands anxiety and depression. I don't remember how I found her online but glad that I did!! -Sharvani ♡☆♡ She's truly a Gem... Jem✨

As a complete beginner and not being quite as agile as I'd like I was a bit nervous about attending a Yoga class but while I may be slightly biased given Elisha of Grow Yoga is my daughter I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of her class. She's a beautiful human with a passion and energy that radiates from her. She explains everything perfectly and encourages you to just go at your own pace and enjoy. On each occasion I've been I've left feeling like the world is a much brighter place with a calmness that is rare to feel in this very busy world. If you do have the chance to try one of her classes please take it, you'll fall in love with Grow Yoga

I have had the most wonderful hypnotherapy session with Fi from the Sheffield Wellness Centre. I knew from previous chats with her that she had the perfect voice and open demeanor for hypnotherapy, and I wasn't wrong. She immediately put me at ease and I was able to open up honestly with her. The session itself was lovely, I went quickly into a trance state and, although it's early days, feel very much that the session was beneficial: I already feel lighter and more in control of the anxiety and other problems I suffer with. The Sheffield Wellness Centre is also the perfect therapeutic space. The therapy rooms are lovely and perfectly suited to a range of therapies and the studio is bright and welcoming. I'm so excited to continue my therapy with Fi and am 100% sure this will give me so much benefit, I can't recommend her and the SWC enough.

Pamper Party What a great idea! A bit of ‘me time’, in the most wonderfully relaxing surroundings. The Wellness Centre has such a relaxed, homely feel to it - much nicer than my actual home, as it is clean, tidy and welcoming! The atmosphere immediately put me at ease, I absolutely loved having time to chill out, chat and eat cake. Fi is the perfect hostess, making sure that we all had everything we needed, with her wonderful warm and caring manner. It was great to be able to choose what particular treatment or massage I wanted on the day. I surprised myself by trying something new and going for the hot stones massage, and I’m so glad I did. It was amazing, so deep and yet so gentle. It was really nice to experience my massage while listening to everyone else chatting happily, too. I completely recommend this if you are looking for the perfect excuse to have some guilt free time to yourself.

The benefits of psychotherapy

Psychotherapy serves as a valuable ally on the journey to mental and emotional well-being, providing numerous benefits that encourage personal growth and enhance psychological health.
Improved mental health

Psychotherapy can help individuals cope with and manage mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD, leading to improved overall psychological well-being.

Enhanced coping skills

Through therapy, individuals can develop healthier coping mechanisms to manage stress, navigate life's challenges, and cope with difficult emotions in a constructive manner.

Increased self-awareness

Psychotherapy promotes self-exploration and self-reflection, allowing individuals to gain a deeper understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. This increased self-awareness can lead to personal growth and a greater sense of empowerment.

What to expect from a psychotherapy session?

In a psychotherapy session, you can expect a safe and confidential space to discuss your thoughts, feelings, and concerns with a trained therapist. The therapist will listen attentively, offering support and guidance as you explore your emotions, behaviours, and relationships. They may ask questions to help you gain insight into your experiences and patterns of thinking, and they may introduce techniques or exercises to help you cope with challenges and develop healthier ways of coping.

Overall, the session is tailored to your individual needs and goals, aiming to promote self-awareness, personal growth, and emotional well-being.

How to choose a psychotherapist?

When selecting a psychotherapist, it’s crucial to find someone who aligns with your needs and preferences. Take into account factors such as their therapeutic approach and areas of expertise. At the Sheffield Wellness Centre, our psychotherapists’ qualifications and specialisations are detailed on their profiles, helping you make an informed choice.

Many psychotherapists offer an initial consultation or discovery call, providing an opportunity to gauge rapport and comfort levels. This interaction allows you to assess whether there’s a good connection, fostering a supportive and collaborative therapeutic relationship.

Psychotherapy FAQs

We’ve gathered our most frequently asked questions about psychotherapy in Sheffield, putting them all in one place for your convenience.

Can't find what you're looking for?
What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling?
Psychotherapy and counselling both involve talking to a trained professional to address emotional and psychological issues, but they differ in scope and depth.

Counselling tends to be shorter-term and focuses on specific issues such as coping with grief, managing stress, or dealing with relationship problems. It is often more structured and goal-oriented, providing practical advice and strategies.

Psychotherapy, on the other hand, is usually longer-term and explores deeper, more complex issues. It aims to uncover underlying patterns and root causes of distress, often delving into past experiences and unconscious processes. Psychotherapists are trained to handle more severe mental health conditions and use a variety of techniques tailored to the individual’s needs.

What is the difference between a psychotherapist and a therapist?
The terms “psychotherapist” and “therapist” are often used interchangeably, but there are distinctions.

A psychotherapist is a specific type of therapist who has undergone extensive training in psychological theories and therapeutic techniques. They are qualified to treat a wide range of mental health conditions, often requiring advanced degrees and certification. Psychotherapists may specialise in different approaches, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, or humanistic therapy.

A therapist is a broader term that can refer to anyone providing mental health treatment, including counsellors, psychologists, and social workers. While all psychotherapists are therapists, not all therapists have the specialised training and qualifications of a psychotherapist.

How much does a psychotherapist charge per hour in the UK?
The cost of seeing a psychotherapist in the UK typically ranges from £50 to £80 per hour. This can vary based on the therapist’s experience, location, and the complexity of the issues being addressed. At the Sheffield Wellness Centre, all of our psychotherapists have their prices on their profile pages.
How long is the waiting list for therapy on the NHS?
Waiting times for therapy on the NHS can be quite variable. The NHS suggests that the waiting lists can be between 6 weeks and 18 weeks for an initial assessment. After the assessment, it can take a further 8 to 18 months to begin treatment. These times can vary depending on the demand for services in your area and the availability of therapists.
Is psychotherapy confidential?
Yes, psychotherapy is confidential. Therapists are bound by professional ethics to keep your information private. This means they cannot share anything you discuss in therapy without your consent. The only exceptions are if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if there is a legal obligation to disclose information. These limits to confidentiality will be explained to you at the start of therapy.
Who can benefit from psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy can benefit a wide range of people. It is helpful for those experiencing significant emotional or psychological distress, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship problems. It can also benefit individuals looking to understand themselves better, improve their mental health, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Essentially, anyone who feels they need support in dealing with life’s challenges can benefit from psychotherapy.
Is psychotherapy covered by private health insurance?
Sometimes. Coverage for psychotherapy depends on your private health insurance provider and the level of cover you have. To be sure, contact your private health care provider and check with them. If you are covered, you will typically need a receipt from your psychotherapist to claim some or all of the cost of therapy.
