Art therapy is a specialised form of psychotherapy that integrates the creative process of making art with psychological treatment. It allows individuals to express their thoughts and emotions visually, providing an alternative and often more accessible method of communication than verbal expression alone.

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a supportive collaboration between a trained therapist and an individual using art materials as their main way of expressing and communicating. It’s particularly helpful when it’s hard to put emotions into words. Guided by the therapist, people explore and work through emotional issues that might feel confusing or overwhelming. This process helps them develop self-awareness, find personal meaning, and gain deeper insights into their feelings and life experiences.

Art therapy is for everyone, regardless of age or background. You don’t need any special artistic skills to benefit from it—just a willingness to engage in the creative process. In sessions, you’ll have a variety of art materials to choose from, creating a comfortable environment where you can freely explore your thoughts and emotions through art.

At the Sheffield Wellness Centre, we’re pleased to offer art therapy for children and adults alike in a safe and supportive environment. Whether you’re dealing with personal challenges, cultural experiences, illness, or disability, our art therapy sessions are designed to help you express yourself creatively and embark on a journey of healing and self-discovery.

Through art therapy, individuals not only find relief from emotional distress but also discover new ways to cope with life’s challenges and build resilience.

Hello, The World at present doesn't have any standards anymore. So I don't expect anything from anyone. However in this case I spoke to a brilliant and diligent staff member called Sarah. She was incredibly pleasant and knew her job like the back of her hand. My inquiry was dealt with a standard which I would have set myself when I used to work. So very happy to have this very pleasant surprise. Keep up the Good Work. I honestly couldn't speak higher of the service. Thanks Steve

Deborah Chadbourn was an excellent grief counsellor for me. It is five years since my first wife died, and we explored how I am feeling now, and how to navigate new and old relationships while remaining true to everything from the past. Deborah is a great listener, and provides good challenge and advice. The venue worked well for me, as did the evening appointments. Thank you!

Shabana is one of those rare people who truly listens and understands without judgement. Her support came at a time when life felt overwhelming, and she helped me slowly rebuild my confidence and sense of self. I always left each session feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded, and the tools she shared continue to help me every day. She helped me piece myself back together and reminded me that healing doesn’t mean becoming someone new — it means rediscovering who you’ve always been. I feel like my old self again, only stronger and more at peace. I can’t thank her enough.

Our work group recently had a Wellness Day and we were able to book Jemma Rosenthal and Ranaa Farooq from the Sheffield Wellness Centre for an instructional workshop. I have since received excellent feedback from group members. Jemma and Ranaa provided a very lively and well-coordinated session. We were able to cover topics such as Visualisation in a systematic manner. All along, attendees were impressed with the passion and interest displayed by both presenters. As an audience, we were certainly captivated. I can wholeheartedly recommend Jemma and Ranaa for any future events.

Came to have my session with Jemma Rosenthal here. The restrooms are so clean. There are steps that one needs to be careful of once you get onto the first floor. Fabulous place other than that, just wish it had a lift. Regarding my session: Oh wow, where do I start?! Even before meeting Jemma, i've felt at ease as there is something with the way she talks, which is so calming and reassuring. My first session was exhaustive, but I loved it. I enjoyed the relaxing Reiki in the end. She tells me that I need to tell her when I am feeling tired of talking about my depressive past and that she can approach a different way of therapy. This feels so liberating because she is basically willing to tailor the session for YOUR needs. She is a wise lady. Though she is younger than me, she is very caring, intelligent and as I said a wise person. I am so happy that our paths crossed and she is helping me come out of my bad phase. I came home and was so relaxed (I was singing freely and my husband noticed a change in the way I sing it was excellent)... I've been happy and been chuckling which is so not like me but the sad phase is jutting out of my system. I've had other private sessions for depression but wanted someone to coach my life who understands anxiety and depression. I don't remember how I found her online but glad that I did!! -Sharvani ♡☆♡ She's truly a Gem... Jem✨

I had a pregnancy massage with Fi and it was amazing! the centre is a very relaxing place and she had it warm and comfortable for me. Despite her wearing PPE, the gloves didn't affect the feel of the massage and wearing masks made me feel safe. The actual massage was so relaxing and relieved any tension I felt as Fi had asked me where any tension was. I would highly recommend her to any pregnant ladies!

As a complete beginner and not being quite as agile as I'd like I was a bit nervous about attending a Yoga class but while I may be slightly biased given Elisha of Grow Yoga is my daughter I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of her class. She's a beautiful human with a passion and energy that radiates from her. She explains everything perfectly and encourages you to just go at your own pace and enjoy. On each occasion I've been I've left feeling like the world is a much brighter place with a calmness that is rare to feel in this very busy world. If you do have the chance to try one of her classes please take it, you'll fall in love with Grow Yoga

I have had the most wonderful hypnotherapy session with Fi from the Sheffield Wellness Centre. I knew from previous chats with her that she had the perfect voice and open demeanor for hypnotherapy, and I wasn't wrong. She immediately put me at ease and I was able to open up honestly with her. The session itself was lovely, I went quickly into a trance state and, although it's early days, feel very much that the session was beneficial: I already feel lighter and more in control of the anxiety and other problems I suffer with. The Sheffield Wellness Centre is also the perfect therapeutic space. The therapy rooms are lovely and perfectly suited to a range of therapies and the studio is bright and welcoming. I'm so excited to continue my therapy with Fi and am 100% sure this will give me so much benefit, I can't recommend her and the SWC enough.

Pamper Party What a great idea! A bit of ‘me time’, in the most wonderfully relaxing surroundings. The Wellness Centre has such a relaxed, homely feel to it - much nicer than my actual home, as it is clean, tidy and welcoming! The atmosphere immediately put me at ease, I absolutely loved having time to chill out, chat and eat cake. Fi is the perfect hostess, making sure that we all had everything we needed, with her wonderful warm and caring manner. It was great to be able to choose what particular treatment or massage I wanted on the day. I surprised myself by trying something new and going for the hot stones massage, and I’m so glad I did. It was amazing, so deep and yet so gentle. It was really nice to experience my massage while listening to everyone else chatting happily, too. I completely recommend this if you are looking for the perfect excuse to have some guilt free time to yourself.

The benefits of art therapy

Art therapy offers valuable support in promoting mental and emotional well-being, providing a range of benefits that encourage personal growth and enhance psychological health.
Improved emotional expression

Art therapy provides a creative outlet for individuals to express emotions that may be difficult to articulate verbally. Through artistic expression, individuals can explore and communicate their feelings more effectively, leading to emotional release and relief.

Enhanced stress reduction

Engaging in art-making during art therapy sessions can promote relaxation and reduce stress levels. The process of creating art can be meditative, helping individuals to unwind, de-stress, and improve overall mental resilience.

Increased self-discovery

Art therapy encourages self-exploration and introspection through the creative process. By creating art and reflecting on their work, individuals gain insights into their inner thoughts, beliefs, and personal experiences. This self-awareness fosters personal growth and a deeper understanding of oneself.

What to expect from an art therapy session?

A variety of art materials will be available for you to choose from based on your comfort and what you wish to create. If you’re feeling uninspired, your therapist can offer gentle guidance. You’ll have the choice of sharing your artwork, feelings, and thoughts with your therapist. It’s perfectly fine if there are days when you decide not to create art.

In an art therapy session, whether you’re a child or an adult, the focus is on exploring your thoughts and emotions through creative expression.

For children, art therapy provides a playful and safe environment to communicate feelings that might be difficult to express verbally. It encourages imagination and helps build confidence. For adults, it offers a reflective space to delve into personal experiences and find new perspectives. Both children and adults can benefit from the therapeutic process of art-making, which can foster emotional healing, improve communication skills, and promote overall well-being.

Do I need to be good at art to do art therapy?

You don’t need to be skilled at art to participate in art therapy. Unlike an art lesson or class, the focus is on the process of expressing your feelings through art rather than creating a finished piece.

Your artwork is your creation and always belongs to you. Some people choose to keep their finished pieces, while others may leave them with the art therapist. Your art therapist will not share your artwork with anyone without your consent.

Art therapy FAQs

We’ve gathered our most frequently asked questions about art therapy in Sheffield, putting them all in one place for your convenience.

Can't find what you're looking for?
Who can benefit from art therapy?
Art therapy benefits individuals of all ages and life stages, providing crucial support for those navigating challenges such as trauma, cultural stressors, illness, or disability. For children, art therapy offers a safe, non-verbal outlet to express complex emotions and process difficult experiences through creative exploration, fostering emotional resilience and confidence. Similarly, adults find art therapy valuable for exploring and addressing emotional issues stemming from past experiences or current circumstances. It provides a reflective environment for gaining insights and developing effective coping strategies, promoting self-expression and discovery regardless of artistic skills. An important aspect of art therapy is its accessibility; participants do not need specific artistic abilities to engage in or benefit from the therapeutic process. Instead, art serves as a powerful tool for communication and emotional expression, supporting mental and emotional well-being for both children and adults alike.
What is the difference between art therapy and counselling?
Art therapy and counselling differ in their methods and focus. Art therapy uses creative expression with art materials to explore emotions and promote healing, often without needing to verbalise feelings directly. It taps into unconscious thoughts and emotions through art-making. In contrast, counselling primarily relies on verbal communication between a therapist and client to address emotions, behaviours, and relationships. Both aim to improve well-being, with art therapy offering a unique non-verbal approach alongside traditional counselling techniques. The choice between them depends on individual preferences and therapeutic needs.
Can art therapy help with specific conditions like anxiety or PTSD?
Yes, art therapy can be beneficial for individuals experiencing conditions such as anxiety, PTSD, depression, trauma, and more. It provides a therapeutic outlet for processing emotions, reducing stress, and promoting healing. Through creative expression, individuals can explore and communicate their feelings in a non-verbal way, which can complement other forms of therapy and support overall mental well-being.
What if I’m not artistic or have no experience with art?
Art therapy does not require any prior artistic skills or experience. The focus is on the process of creating and expressing rather than the end result. Your therapist will guide you through activities that are comfortable and engaging for you, supporting you in finding creative ways to explore your thoughts and emotions. Art therapy is about the journey of self-discovery and healing through creative expression, regardless of your artistic background.
Can art therapy benefit children?
Art therapy can help children who may struggle with verbal expression. It assists children facing emotional difficulties like anxiety, grief, or behavioural issues by enabling them to explore and communicate their feelings in a non-verbal manner. Art therapy can also support children with developmental challenges or disabilities, helping to enhance their self-esteem and communication skills through creative expression. It can aid children in processing life transitions and changes within their families or schools, offering a safe space for emotional exploration and adjustment. Overall, art therapy fosters healing, creativity, and emotional development in children of all abilities.
Can I choose what type of art materials I want to use?
Yes, in art therapy sessions, you typically have the choice to select from a variety of art materials based on your comfort and preference. Whether you prefer drawing, painting, sculpting, or other forms of artistic expression, your therapist will provide options that suit your needs and encourage creative exploration. This flexibility allows you to engage with materials that resonate with you personally, helping to facilitate emotional expression and therapeutic growth through art.
